New York editor Warren Haggerty (Tracy) hires his out-of-work former employer Bill Chandler (Powell) to marry Haggerty's fiancée, Gladys Benton (Harlow)--then court libeled heiress Connie Allenbury (Loy). The plan is for Gladys to sue Connie for alienation of affection and force her to drop the suit against the newspaper. But aboard a ship returning from Europe to the United States, Bill and Connie fall in love ... throwing Warren's devious scheme into complete disarray.
