Meky

Meky

It was one of the biggest shocks of our popular music at the time, after fourteen continuous victories of Karel Gott in the Golden Nightingale poll, the most prestigious music award in Czechoslovakia was blown up by a shy spectacle outsider, singer Miro Žbirka from Bratislava. The year was 1982, Mecca experienced his own Beatlemania, he wrote hits that still live. Outside the spotlights, he was already in a lot of pain, he had a long way to go to filming in the famous Abbey Road studios. What has happened to Meky Žbirka from the moment he first picked up a guitar until the moment he revealed his life to filmmakers? He used to be a long-haired rocker and a British elegant man, he played as a salaried musician abroad before he reached adulthood, he experienced the loss of his brother, expulsion from the band as well as crowds of fans, fame and musical triumphs. How did he cope with the accident of a loved one and the temptations of the almighty communist party during the socialist era? The film Mecca tells of complete devotion to music, about faith in one's own way, although it often led elsewhere than everyone recommended it to him. About how to overcome great social revolutions and life changes with elegance. Director Šimon Šafránek, the holder of the Czech Lion for the documentary King Skate, created a dynamic portrait of a musical legend using Žbirka's open confession, contemporary footage and extensive archival material.
